Dr. Dewachi explores the enduring legacies of war on health, medicine, and the body in the Middle East. Trained in medicine in Iraq and public health in Beirut, he received his PhD in anthropology from Harvard University. He is the author of Ungovernable Life: Mandatory Medicine and Statecraft in Iraq and the forthcoming Death of the Clinic: Chronicles of War Biology, which traces how decades of conflict have reshaped medical landscapes, therapeutic practices, and microbial life across the region. A former faculty member at the American University of Beirut, Dewachi is now Associate Professor and Chair of Anthropology at Rutgers University. His research has been featured in The New York Times, The Lancet, and Al Jazeera, and he is a leading voice on the intersections of war, medicine, and the environment.
